Working all week in the dark in a hole I used to be a man, but now I’m a mole. Digging in the Dark for Old King Coal But it’s Friday night and the workdays done, We’re heading for the light, time for some fun. For the Backshift Boys alright. And it’s Hey - here we go, Heading for the light from the black below The temperature’s hot and it’s time to blow for the Backshift Boys below.

Has anyone seen my whippet? Has anyone seen my dog? I'm so sad without her, a wheel without a cog. Has anyone seen my whippet? Has anyone seen my dog? She won't run, walk or jog, has anyone seen my dog?

The pit head lies behind As weary feet make way Back home to bed, first bath and fed And work another day Another day (rpt) Pit lads ride the shoulders Nod to Father’s tread, Sleep and dream, work the seam Could be now until you’re dead Until you’re dead (rpt) But you have dreams of a different kind Where dark is blown away by sky And the dust is banished by the breeze Where birds can fly, and so can I The hope burns brightly in your eye It will be alright, bye and bye.

Old Grey Men 05:09
Old Grey Men of yesterday Gone now, they’ve faded all away. Skyline of yesterday, Stained and grey in so many ways, Grey smoke, grey caps made old grey men. Gone now like yesterday, Disappear is a dream of grey, Those old grey men of yesterday. Their shadows and shapes in the lamplight play The old grey men gossip and pray Stamp their feet and rage against the day Woodbine smoke drift to the sky They talk of time and men gone by Of times of work and times of pain. Those old grey men of yesterday Betting shop call on Saturday morn, Heads bent low to study the form, Place a careful shilling every way. Head back home to watch TV Black and white shimmer of what might be Winners and losers some must be today, Maybe the old grey men of yesterday.

Bevin Boys 05:46
We're digging down, digging down, digging down. Bevin boys, miners for the crown. And we'll keep on digging down with no let for sleep or sup Until we meet the devil digging up. I'm thrown into this town, half past sinner, half past clown. To dig a job that isn't mine, that the local lads did fine. But they marched away one sunny day, and the mine fell mighty slack, So the Bevin Boys came round this way, 'cos they aren't coming back. And they say that down the mine, Old Nick you'll likely meet. Well, he'll give a warmer welcome than the folks on the street. We're not welcome in this town, not welcome down the mine, Come on dig they told us, it'll all work out just fine. I'd rather be in khaki, with me rifle in me hand, Not this rusty metal shovel, in this bloody Bevin band. No polish or brass are needed by the soldiers of the mine, But It would be nice to have a friend on my front line. Cramlington, Ashington, Ellington and Lynemouth too, The mining lads they heard the call and marched to follow the blue Choppington, Sleekburn, and Old Woodhorn too, The Bevin Boys came round this way, with a dirty old job to do. Our fighting men can't fight, with no coal or steel or tin, Without the coal we dig, our fighting boys can't win. No steam for the engines, no steel for the mill, Our country needed miners, and that's where we came in. So they showed me how, to be a soldier of the mine

Johnny Miner 04:16
Johnny Miner, you were born Never to see the rising dawn Now it's time that you were gone Farewell Johnny Miner! They've promised you the earth sometimes To get coal from their stinkin' mines Now the justice for their crimes Is Farewell, Johnny Miner! And farewell Durham, Yorkshire too Nottingham, the same to you Scotland, South Wales, say Adieu Farewell Johnny Miner You've battled with the sliding scale Lungs turned black & faces pale Now your body's up for sale Farewell Johnny Miner! And Farewell John, don't take it hard Unemployment isn't bad They'll treat you well in the knackers' yard Farewell Johnny Miner!
